CREMATION - BURIAL PRECEPTS
When a person dies, his head is placed toward the north and a diya lit at his/her head-side. Relatives should consult their calendar or Pandit to see whether death has occurred in Panchak or not.
INGREDIENTS.
BURIAL. Milk, water, tulasi, til, mango leaves, kusha grass, ghee, camphor, agarbatti, rice, flowers, white cotton, match, dhoop, 5 pindas.
CREMATION. 1 ton wood, 10 lb. ghee, 5 lb. samagree, 5 packs agarbatti, til, match, long spoon, 5 yds. white cotton, milk, water, dhoop, mango leaves, tulasi, 1 box camphor, flowers, glasses, kusha grass, 5 pindas.
PINDA. Five (5) pindas are offered on the day of the funeral, and one (1) the day after at the cremation site. Ten (10) pindas are also offered on the tenth day at the ‘Dashagaatra” ceremony. These sixteen (16) pindas make up the “Maleen” or “Neech Shodashee”. Another sixteen (16) pindas are offered at the “Madhyam Shodashee” ceremony, i.e. the 12th day Shraaddha, (or 13th day in some cases). At the “Maasika (monthly) Shraaddha”, another sixteen (16) pindas are offered, referred to as “Uttama Shodashee”, making a total of forty-eight (48) pindas. A “Sapindee Shraaddha” is also performed for the Pitris (deceases ancestors) by the offering of four (4) pindas.
PROCEDURE
On the day of the funeral, the body is bathed and new clothes put on. The mantras are:

After the Cremation or Burial, take a bath and perform Tilaan-jali (water, til and flower) in the Southern direction.

Returning home, the yajmaan and others who took part in the funeral rites should perform those acts according to the prevailing family custom. They wash their hands, touch fire, water, iron, wood, dye and grass. They also drink sweetened water. Reading of religious texts and singing of Bhajans are done each night.
END OF FUNERAL
RITES OF THE SECOND DAY
On the morning of the second day, the Yajmaan should offer handfuls of water and til for the Devas towards the East; for the Sages towards the North, and for the Pitris towards the South. He should also offer one handful for rhe Deceased person towards the South, reciting the following:

Light a diya and offer prayers for the Atma of the departed. In the case of cremation, the Yajmaan and others return to the cremation site for the collection and disposal of the ashes. At the Cremation site,
(a) Go around the ashes 3 times;
(b) Sprinkle milk and water on the ashes;
(c) Collect bones and ashes in a Kalasha;
(d) Offer one panda on a kowa leaf with this mantra.

(e) The Yajmaan offers prayers to Ganga. He puts a flower of the ashes, toches his head and heart, then places it in water. They all return home and have a bath.
DUDHMUHI
In the evening, a diya is lit near the kusha grass in the yard. Food, milk and water are placed there.
